Superyacht career pathways
The ladder isn't the same on every yacht. A 45m interior is two people; a 140m+ superyacht interior is a hotel org chart with ranks smaller boats never carry — purser's office, store keeper, an onboard nurse. Pick a department and a yacht size to see how the structure, and your route up it, changes.
On 140m+ superyachts — 70 to 100 crew all-in, think Azzam or Dilbar — the interior alone is 20+ people, and the service and housekeeping towers run parallel: juniors under lead stewardesses under heads of department, meeting at the chief. New ranks appear that smaller boats never carry: one or two nurses reporting straight to the chief stewardess, a spa manager over the therapists, and a purser's office on top (the store keeper sits in the galley, under the head chef). The nurse is a specialist hire, not a stew promotion rung.
Typical structures, not rules — headcounts vary with build, itinerary and whether a yacht runs private or charter. Stacked cards mean several people hold that role at this size; dashed lines mark steps that exist on many but not all programs. Click a role to see related training.
How big does the crew actually get?
Total crew across all departments, by yacht length. The biggest boats afloat carry proper ship's companies — Azzam (180m) runs around 80 crew, Dilbar (157m) around 96 — which is exactly why their ladders grow extra rungs.

Deck
- 1.Junior Deckhand ×4–8 · Tender / Dive Specialist ×2–4
- 2.Lead Deckhand ×2–3
- 3.Bosun ×1–2
- 4.2nd / 3rd Officer (OOW) ×3–4 · Security Officer ×1–2
- 5.Chief Officer ×1–2
- 6.Staff Captain ×1
- 7.Captain ×1
A 140m+ deck department adds a rank most crew never meet: the staff captain — a second master-ticketed officer who runs day-to-day deck operations and crew management so the captain can run the wider program. Below that sits a full officer corps, dedicated security, two bosuns, and a junior base big enough to crew tenders, toys and dive operations simultaneously.
Engineering
- 1.Motorman / Wiper ×3–5 · AV/IT Engineer ×2–3
- 2.4th Engineer ×1–2 · ETO ×2–3
- 3.3rd Engineer ×1–2 · Senior ETO ×1
- 4.2nd Engineer ×2
- 5.Chief Engineer ×1
Giga-yacht engine rooms run watch systems closer to a cruise ship than a yacht: numbered engineers from 4th up to two watchkeeping 2nds, motormen and wipers below, and a parallel electro-technical department — multiple ETOs and AV/IT engineers under a senior ETO — keeping propulsion, hotel systems and a small city's worth of electronics alive around the clock.
Galley
- 1.Commis / Junior Chef ×2–3 · Crew Chef ×1–2
- 2.Sous Chef ×2 · Pastry Chef ×1 · Store Keeper ×1–2
- 3.Executive / Head Chef ×1
A 140m+ galley is a full brigade feeding 80+ crew and up to 36 guests every day: commis and dedicated crew chefs under two sous chefs, a pastry chef running desserts and breads as their own station, and an executive chef on top — with a store keeper reporting straight to the head chef on provisioning and dry stores, and the MCA Ship's Cook Certificate in the mix for compliance. Store keeper is a specialist hire, not a chef promotion rung.
