Engineering department courses run from the Approved Engine Course (AEC1/AEC2) entry point through to Officer of the Watch (Engineering) and ETO training.
Engineering isn't one job either
On a small yacht, one engineer covers mechanical, electrical and IT systems. The larger the yacht and the bigger the engineering team, the more these split into distinct, separately trained roles. Filter the table below by track, or jump straight to one:
Marine Engineering
Mechanical systems — main engines, generators, water-makers and HVAC — from AEC1 through to Officer of the Watch (Engineering).
ETO (Electrical)Electro-Technical Officer track — electrical and electronic systems, automation and control, a dedicated role on larger yachts.
AV/IT & CommsAudio-visual systems, networking, onboard IT infrastructure and communications — an increasingly common dedicated role on larger yachts.
