About this course
The ETO Certificate of Competency isn't a single short course — it's an assessment and record-book route for people who already have an electrical/electronic engineering qualification and sea time. Candidates complete the MNTB Electro-Technical Officer Competency Record Book; part of the academic requirement can be met via the single-subject SQA Chief Engineer Electro-Technology course, studied at South Shields or via distance learning.
Prerequisites: An approved degree, foundation degree or HND/HNC in Electrical and Electronic Engineering; qualifying seagoing service (at least 6 months, up to 33 months, including 3 months approved workshop skills training); valid STCW Basic and Advanced safety certificates; a valid ENG1 (or equivalent) medical certificate; and MCA-approved oral exams plus underpinning knowledge tests, per MSN 1860 (M) Amendment 1.
