From the RYA Yachtmaster to Commercial Command
A plain-English guide to the RYA → MCA yachting pathway

Your Yachtmaster is the foundation. Turned commercial and built on with sea time and an MCA oral exam, it opens the door to captaining coded yachts for a living — and starts the climb toward the big superyachts.

01 · The starting ticket
The RYA Yachtmaster
The RYA Yachtmaster is a certificate of competence. On its own it's a recreational qualification — to work off it, you make it commercially endorsed.
Yachtmaster Offshore
Coastal & offshore
Master, up to 200 GT, within 150 nm of a safe haven. The workhorse ticket. Commercially endorsed, it lets you skipper small commercial vessels, and it's the prerequisite for the MCA Officer of the Watch route up to 3000 GT.
Yachtmaster Ocean
Worldwide, unlimited area
Master, up to 200 GT, any ocean passage. Removes the 150 nm limit. Commercially endorsed, it's your route to the unlimited-area Master 200, and a prerequisite for Chief Mate, Master 500 and Master 3000.
The “online” part — cleared up
The bit you do online is the commercial endorsement, not the licence upgrade. To endorse a Yachtmaster you add the RYA Professional Practices & Responsibilities (PPR) online course, plus STCW Basic Safety Training, an ENG1 medical, a VHF/SRC radio ticket and valid first aid. That endorsement makes your existing ticket usable at work — it does not by itself give you the MCA 200 GT master licence.

02 · The MCA 200 GT master licence
Earning the licence
Its full name is the MCA Master (Code Vessels) < 200 GT / OOW (Yachts) < 500 GT. It's a full STCW II/2 management-level CoC — the one many foreign flag states and operators recognise where they'd query an RYA ticket. It isn't an instant online conversion: it's earned.
Two flavours. Hold Yachtmaster Offshore → you get the Limited Master 200 (150 nm). Hold Yachtmaster Ocean → you get the Unlimited Master 200. The Ocean route is worth it if you plan to keep climbing.
- 1
Hold a commercially endorsed Yachtmaster
Offshore or Ocean, endorsement current. This is the entry requirement — nothing below it counts.
- 2
Build 6 months' seagoing service
Actual sea service on vessels of any size, in the deck department, after you hold the Yachtmaster. Proved with two forms of evidence per vessel (testimonial + discharge, or an attested service record book). This is usually the single biggest time cost.
- 3
Complete the required courses
The Yachtmaster shorebased course (Offshore or Ocean, matching your ticket), GMDSS/GOC radio, HELM (Operational), and current STCW Basic Safety Training + ENG1 medical.
- 4
Get your Notice of Eligibility
Send your evidence to the MCA. They assess it and issue a Notice of Eligibility — you can't book the exam without it.
- 5
Pass the MCA oral exam
Roughly a one-hour oral with an MCA examiner at a UK exam centre, going well beyond Yachtmaster level — port-state work, stability, bridge and radar procedure, legal awareness. This is the actual gate to the licence.
03 · What 200 GT actually means
Tonnage, not length
Gross tonnage measures a vessel's internal volume — not its length and not its weight. So “200 GT” doesn't map neatly to a length, and the honest answer is smaller than the brochure feeling suggests.
The rough rule
For a typical beamy motor yacht, 200 GT is reached somewhere around 30–33 m. A slim sailing yacht can be far longer for the same tonnage — a 46 m Jongert measures only ~254 GT.
So, 35–40 m Westport-style motor yachts? Those generally sit above 200 GT. A 34 m Westport is already ~250–290 GT. For most 35–40 m motor yachts you're looking at a Master 500 or Master 3000, not the 200.
Where 200 GT really shines
Command of smaller yachts and coded workboats — wind-farm transfer vessels, pilot boats, delivery and relief skipper work — plus standing watch (OOW) on yachts up to 500 GT.
04 · The route beyond
The passage plan
The 200 is a bridging ticket. Important: there's no shortcut from Master 200 to Master 500/3000 — you route through Officer of the Watch and its sea time first.
| Waypoint | Limit | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Yachtmaster (commercially endorsed) | ≤ 200 GT | Your foundation. Skipper coded vessels; prerequisite for everything above. |
| MCA Master (Code Vessels) < 200 GT — this guide | ≤ 200 GT | Recognised STCW management-level command ticket. Optional but often demanded by operators and non-UK flags. |
| OOW (Yachts) < 3000 GT | ≤ 3000 GT (watch) | The real gateway to big-yacht careers. Worldwide officer-of-the-watch on yachts up to 3000 GT — and the mandatory step before any larger master ticket. |
| Master (Yachts) < 500 GT | ≤ 500 GT (command) | Command of mid-size superyachts. Requires the Ocean-route CoC in your history plus qualifying sea service. |
| Master (Yachts) < 3000 GT | ≤ 3000 GT (command) | The top of the yacht CoC ladder — command of the 40 m+ Westport-class boats. This, not the 200, is the captain's ticket for that size. |
05 · Straight talk
What you hear vs. how it works
| The quick version you hear | How it actually works |
|---|---|
| “Convert your Yachtmaster online to an MCA 200.” | Only the endorsement is online. The 200 needs 6 months' sea time and a UK oral exam. |
| “200 GT lets you run 35–40 m superyachts.” | 200 GT ≈ up to low-30 m motor yachts. 35–40 m usually means 500 or 3000. |
| “It's basically the same as the RYA ticket.” | It's a full STCW II/2 CoC — recognised where an RYA ticket gets questioned. |
| “Master 200 leads straight to Master 500/3000.” | No shortcut. You go through OOW < 3000 GT and its sea service first. |
Frequently asked questions
Can I convert my RYA Yachtmaster to an MCA licence entirely online?
No. Only the commercial endorsement is online (the RYA PPR course plus STCW, ENG1, VHF/SRC and first aid). The MCA Master (Code Vessels) < 200 GT licence itself requires 6 months' qualifying sea service after you hold the Yachtmaster, a set of required courses, a Notice of Eligibility from the MCA, and a pass in the MCA oral exam.
Does a 200 GT licence let me captain a 35-40m superyacht?
Usually not. Gross tonnage measures internal volume, not length, so 200 GT typically caps out around 30-33m for a beamy motor yacht — a 34m Westport-style yacht is already roughly 250-290 GT. Most 35-40m motor yachts need a Master 500 or Master 3000 licence, not the 200.
What's the difference between Yachtmaster Offshore and Yachtmaster Ocean?
Offshore is capped at 150 nautical miles from a safe haven; Ocean removes that limit for any ocean passage. Both are Master tickets up to 200 GT once commercially endorsed, but only the Ocean route leads to the Chief Mate and Master 500/3000 pathway, so it's worth choosing if you plan to keep climbing the ladder.
Can I go straight from Master 200 to Master 500 or Master 3000?
No — there's no shortcut. You route through Officer of the Watch (Yachts) < 3000 GT and its associated sea service first, regardless of holding the 200.
Guide only — a plain-English orientation, not the official syllabus. Exact requirements, course lists and eligibility are set by the MCA (Marine Guidance / MSN notices) and the RYA, and they change. Confirm current requirements with the MCA and an RYA/MCA-recognised training centre before committing time or money. Tonnage-to-length figures are approximate; gross tonnage depends on a vessel's volume, so always check a specific yacht's tonnage certificate.
